Title: VP of Process Development Chemistry and Manufacturing
Location: Roxboro, NC, and Nalu Bio's Pilot Plant (Northern or Southern California)
Position: Full-time. Reports to Chief Technology Officer.

Company: Nalu Bio is a biotech company creating a new category of chemistry-based cannabinoids for the consumer and pharmaceutical markets. Nalu Bio has developed a proprietary cannabinoid chemical synthesis platform that will set a new industry standard for pure, consistent, and quality cannabinoids. Our innovative chemistry will solve many of the quality and consistency issues that plague cannabis-derived products currently. We have a world-class team highly experienced in healthcare, chemistry, cannabinoids, consumer packaged goods, and drug development.
The Role: We are seeking a VP of Process Development Chemistry and Manufacturing who will join a rapidly expanding team. This role is a career-defining opportunity to gain diverse experiences in developing and scaling commercially relevant chemical processes for cannabinoids. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead and manage Nalu Bio’s pilot manufacturing scale-up programs for cannabinoids from the benchtop to the pilot and manufacturing scale. You will have the opportunity to lead manufacturing at the pilot scale to meet commercial milestones, timelines, and deadlines. You will serve as a technical expert in the early stages of production planning, including hands-on optimization of pilot and production processes while working with the internal R&D team as well as external partners to accelerate the scale-up and commercialization processes. This candidate is a creative problem solver at heart who thrives in a start-up environment. This role is responsible for managing timelines, deliverables, and pilot plant technicians. The Ideal Candidate has:
  • A Ph.D. in chemistry with 7-10 years of experience in scale-up and chemistry process development and manufacturing
  • Strong track record of success in scaling up chemical processes through successful commercial production and market launch.
  • Strong background in organic synthetic chemistry, and demonstrated ability to scale synthetic chemistry
  • Experience overseeing chemical manufacturing at the pilot scale to meet commercial milestones, timelines, and deadlines with a strong ability to provide technical support post-launch
  • Managerial responsibility at the site leader level for biopharmaceutical or cannabinoid GMP manufacturing
  • Ability to evaluate chemical manufacturing processes to meet customer specifications
  • Provide technical support to evaluate manufacturing feasibility and cost considerations during the product's progression toward commercialization.
  • Innovate on currently implemented downstream processes to drive down costs, decrease time of production, and improve purity and yield
  • Experience with cannabinoid chemistry or related molecules is a plus
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to balance multiple deliverables and responsibilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to incorporate safety concepts into processes and equipment design.
  • Flexibility to travel to partner sites.
